Our Roots
Founded with the mission to support literacy and learning through arts and culture, Rohi’s has continuously evolved to meet the needs of diverse communities. The initiative started by offering small, community-based literacy programs and has since grown into a recognized leader in critical literacy education.
Rohi's Readery was founded in honor of Pranoo Kumar's annama (grandmother in Hindi), after whom the store is named. A fierce advocate for children during colonized rule in India, her unwavering dedication to education and justice continues to inspire our mission to create an inclusive, empowering community space where the stories and voices of marginalized groups are celebrated and honored.
In response to the community demand, we then established Rohi's Liberation Station 501c3 to ensure sustainability of our mission. Rohi's Liberation Station represents an evolution of our mission to foster Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) alongside promoting critical literacy and building liberatory experiences for all ages.
What Rohi’s Readery is providing is nothing new. It is instead built on the gratitude and inspiration from those who have had the courage to speak about all things social justice, especially when it pertains to children. May we live in service of the bravery of our ancestors and descendants.
